The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is located in Germany and is the section of river between Koblenz and Rüdesheim. In around 1000 A.D. a castle was built on a knoll on the east bank of the Rhine, and Burg Ehrenbreitstein gradually developed.From the Middle Ages until the late eighteenth century Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier. In 1794 the city was taken over by France and, in 1815, Prussia. We travel up the Rhine whose source is situated in the Swiss Alps and gradually makes it way to the North Sea. High up on the riverbank is the huge Germania which points the way to Rüdesheim in the midst of numerous vineyards. This picturesque city, which has more visitors than actual residents, was settled in prehistoric times. A mediaeval church, wooden buildings and stately homes, and the famous Drosselgasse, characterize the city. In a fine sun kissed location, its vineyards prospered as did the constant trade brought by the river. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a thing of beauty!
